Should American Sign Language be taught as a class at school?

In my opinion, I believe American Sign Language (ASL) should be taught in school. Being deaf is more common than most think. Since many people are unaware of ASL, they should learn. More schools should offer ASL as a language class on top of the French and Spanish classes.

In 2015, 360 million people around the world were reported to have a serious hearing loss.

This is 5% of our world population. These people rely on ASL to communicate with others around them. In the United States, as a nation, more kids learn foreign languages rather than ASL because it supposedly progresses them in society.

There are many benefits for those who learn ASL. It is proven that hand movement helps master oral speaking more efficiently. It is also scientifically shown that children who learn other languages at a young age, learn it more natural than kids who attempt to learn it later in life. A study directed by Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn shows that children who learn ASL at a younger age, tend to grow up with a higher IQ level than others in their grade level.

ASL makes a significant impact on people’s lives. Ways you can spread ASL throughout our community is go to your principal and propose the suggestion of adding these classes to the district, make ASL a club on Fridays, or learn at home online. Take the stance for American Sign Language to be a class in school.
